What we do

Hillfields Community Garden

Hillfields Community Garden is in Hillfields Park and is open to the public 24/7 - we run regular groups and events here for families, children and adults.

A welcoming and open space the garden gives local residents a space to grow, connect, and volunteer. We welcome all members of the community to the garden to share in growing edible plants,  being in nature and promoting healthy eating through shared meals.

The garden has been designed by the community for the community and it was built by the community too! Our community growing space provides positive activities for people of all ages to connect with nature.

The Community Garden has two bug houses, a three-bay compost system and rain water harvesting, truck tyres for perennials, 8 raised beds, two at triple height for easy access, a rose garden and orchard. Groups and events are run from the Community Garden, which acts as a demonstration space for growing, cooking, nature connection, wellbeing and community activities.

Hillfields Park Community Centre

Hillfields Park Community Centre is in Hillfields Park, off Thicket Avenue. The building is an amazing space that hosts many different community groups.

The Community Centre is spread over two floors and has two meeting rooms, a dedicated art room, music studio, sports hall, community counseling, community kitchen and foyer. We’ve also got a cosy home corner, a breastfeeding and prayer room, games, crafts and books.

With accessible parking in front of the centre and room for 10 cars in our car park, the centre is also on the number 6 bus route, 2 minutes from the Bristol and Bath Railway Path and is now signposted within the ward.

Community Kitchen

Hillfields Community Café is open on a Thursday — a friendly, low‑cost space serving hot drinks, cakes, toasties, soup, kids’ lunch bags, and a weekly veggie special.

Our Hillfields Community Lunch, on a Friday,
is an opportunity for anyone and everyone from Hillfields to come together to share lunch and chat.

Our community cafe is supported by a team of local volunteers using locally grown and redistributed food.

All of our food is vegetarian and halal‑friendly, with vegan and gluten‑free options.

To support our community, we also offer food vouchers, a pay‑it‑forward option and a Community Food Larder. Everything is open to anyone who needs it, with no questions asked and no barriers to access.

Climate and Nature

Hillfields Community Climate Action launched in 2024, after engagement with residents about local climate priorities. We now facilitate a regular resident led Hillfields CAN (Climate and Nature) group and are beginning to bring our Community Climate Action Plan to life.

Hillfields Community Garden was chosen as one of six organisations in Bristol to take part in this pioneering, community‑led climate project, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and coordinated by Bristol Climate and Nature Partnership.

Our community plan focuses on nature, food, transport, energy, buildings, waste and green jobs, with practical actions shaped by local people. You can download the summary or read the full plan online.
