Hillfields Community Garden is a welcoming and open space within Hillfields Park that gives local residents a space to come together to grow, connect and volunteer.
We started working on this project in 2020 with an aim to: • Help reduce isolation and improve mental health through nature, wellbeing activities and social events. • Bring all members of the community together especially families with young children and marginalised groups. • Grow, share and cook our own produce promoting healthy eating through shared meals. • Provide a volunteering programme that upskill and connects people, especially those who are facing unemployment or isolation. The Community Garden so far has, raised beds, an orchard, bug house, planters, a compost heap and seating. As we are in a public park the Community Garden is open 24/7 for local residents to enjoy and use. The garden has been designed by the community for the community and it was built by the community too! Our community growing space has ignited interest and passion among our local community and is already providing positive activities for people of all ages to connect with nature. In our first year of operation we have seen many different groups of people, some of who are often marginalised within the community, come together to enjoy, use and share the garden space. |
